Fortune 500 Sr. Technical Writer

Would you like to become
a
well-paid and
well-respected
TECHNICAL
WRITER ?
Dear Friend,
Thanks for visiting this
page.
My name is Ugur (rhymes with
"Sure") Akinci. I'm a copy and technical writer with 20 years
of experience, the last 10 with Fortune 500
corporations, and I have a confession to make right
away:
I do not have any
get-rich-quick secrets or a method to help you make a million
dollars overnight.
No
gimmicks
As you've noticed, on this
page there are no photos of expensive European sports cars
parked in front of a gigantic mansion by the Ocean, or a
gleaming private jet parked next to my private golf
course.
I'm assuming you are sick and
tired of such gimmicks just like I am.
A solid
writing career
What I do have to offer is a
chance to develop a sane and solid writing career that is in
high demand and that pays pretty well -- depending of course
where you live, what company you work for, and the background
and motivation you bring to the task.
But I'm getting ahead of
myself since I'd like to share with you how I ended up becoming
a technical writer. Hint: I wasn't born one :-))
The
journalist
You see,
once upon a time in the mid-90s I used to be a journalist -- a
pretty good one too.
I was a
member of the National Press Club on the 14th
Street in Washington DC, just two blocks away from the
White House, and accredited by both the U.S. State
Department and the U.S. Congress. (I
still keep my laminated press badges for old times'
sake.)
I
interviewed the news makers every day, chased the leads
with my microcasette recorder in hand, asked questions to the
powerful and not so-powerful, bumped into the famous and
not-so-famous, did hundreds and perhaps thousands of stories,
and all that.
I was proud of what I was
doing. I loved making my rounds around the
nation's capital as a reporter and doing the best I
could.
The
bills, piling up...
Yet frankly, I also struggled
hard to make ends meet. Most people didn't know that aspect of
my "glamorous" job.
Paying the bills
was sometimes a problem and our debts kept piling up. Our
son was going to elementary school already and I knew
that at some point I had to make more money; not once
in a while, but every month.
A happy
coincidence
Then,
about 10 years ago, I
discovered Technical Writing by sheer coincidence.
You know how?
A recruiter working with
a friend of mine knew that I was a journalist and I wasn't too
happy about my overall financial
situation either.
So she asked me point-blank if
I ever considered tech writing! The truth is I never even
thought about it before...
That's exactly how I stumbled
upon this excellent writing career.
Hindsight
To this date I'm kicking
myself why I hadn't tried it
earlier. Ahh,
hindsight is always perfect, isn't it?
I was a bit late to discover
this excellent writing niche but I never looked back
since.

Fact:
Top-earning senior technical writers in
Nevada made $114,950 in
2006, according to Society for Technical
Communication's latest available national
salary survey.
|
Now I see other writers in the
same situation.
Is this
you?
Not only "other writers" but
all kinds of well educated and talented people, of all ages and
from all walks of life, also go through the same frustrations
that I went through myself.
Work-from-home moms and dads,
teachers, librarians, engineers, journalists, ex-service men
and women, actors, artists, drivers, real estate
agents, people in sales and advertisement, civil servants,
you name it...
I know how it feels to be
good, hard-working and talented but somehow failing to make
enough money to take care of one's family and loved
ones.
Yes,
been there...
I've been there and
I still remember the sense of dread with which I
sometimes used to go back home, not knowing how to
solve our financial problem...
So that's when technical
writing came into my life and things were never the
same after then.
Perhaps that might be your
solution too?
Perhaps, just like I did, you
may also benefit from a change of pace and a shift in
careers. You're the only one who can decide that of
course.
A fair
warning
But even if and
when you make that decision, I'm not going to lie to you:
it's probably not going to be
that easy to shift to technical writing. I wish it
would be.
Why?
Because I know exactly
how it is... it's a classic
Catch-22 chicken-and-egg
situation:
- They'll ask you
to show some work samples before they offer you a position
as a technical writer...
- But since you've
never worked as one before, you won't have any work samples
to show!
Ugh!
And the vicious cycle would
continue...
